Abstract:

The relevance of the study is determined by the need to form an active personality able to follow the principle of responsibility for decisions made to oneself and the people around. It is emphasized that responsibility is a multidimensional concept and various fields of knowledge study it. The purpose of the research presented in the article is to get a better understanding of the responsibility of the individual from the perspective of sociology and psychology. The analysis of the works of sociologists and psychologists demonstrated that the concept under study has two sides – social (external) and psychological (internal) ones. This conclusion allows us to distinguish two components in the structure of responsibility: social and personal components. Their balanced functioning makes for the effective activity of the individual as well as society as a whole. Social aspect of individual responsibility is interpreted by a number of positions: awareness of the personal role in the system of social relations; constant observance of the established rules; assessment of their actions; willingness to be responsible for decisions made. Psychological aspect of the individual’s responsibility is demonstrated by its maturity in making decisions that allow to take adequate actions, despite the fact that it would be easier to use other, less effective efforts. The study of responsibility from these two perspectives makes it possible to conclude that there is insufficient information about it in scientific literature and we can characterize this field of study of personal responsibility as а promising one. We demonstrated that responsibility of an individual the authors are studying can remain at two levels: executive and active levels. The first level identifies responsibility for oneself / one’s actions, the second implies a volitional decision in regard to responsibility for other people. The description of these levels in scientific literature is not in high demand, which is why the study of these levels has a significant prospect. It is noted that the formation of personal responsibility occurs under the influence of principles developed by society and the requirements applicable to it.
