Abstract:

The article presents empirical research data regarding the process of modern adolescents’ adulting. The relevance of the study is conditioned by contradictions associated with changes in the adulthood criteria, avoidance of their standard understanding, lengthening the transition period from childhood to adulthood. The purpose of the study is to identify individual and psychological characteristics of adulting process in adolescents. Presumably, adulting is a process of formation (development) of a mature personality, distinguished by maturation and qualitative change of certain characteristics, which is determined by socialization and individualization. Development of personality maturity in adolescence is defined as a result of a child’s adulting, which is characterized by qualitative changes in the structural and substantive characteristics that influence the adulting process. The empirical study data regarding individual psychological characteristics of adulting are presented in the article. The study involved students of the 6th and 9th grades aged 11–12 and 15–16 years (59 students of the 9th grade and 45 students of the 6th grade). To solve the problems posed in the study, we used the following psycho-diagnostic tools: methods of diagnosing personal maturity (V. А. Ruzhenkov, V. V. Ruzhenkova, I. S. Lukyantseva); self-attitude questionnaire (V. V. Stolin, S. R. Pantileyev); meaning of life orientations tests by D. A. Leontiev. It is shown that adulting formation is characterized by severity of adolescent maturity characteristics: responsibility, meaningful perception of life, self-attitude of a person (self-acceptance, self-esteem), independence (autonomy), self-actualization (self-development) of a person, tolerance in social interactions, positive thinking and personal activity. It has been established that self-confidence and critical attitude to other people’s judgments regarding oneself, as well as integral “I-concept” are more often formed by the age of 15–16. It has been clarified that on the verge of senior adolescence, the relationship between meaningfulness of life and tolerance increases, which may indicate gradual mastering the rules and norms of social interaction. It is during this period that the process of growing up is perceived by a teenager as gaining the right to choose one’s life path and discovering self-determination. The obtained data formed the foundation for the compilation of a program of psychological and pedagogical support for children in adolescence in order to form characteristics and personality traits that promote maturity and harmonious transition from childhood to adulthood, support in problem situations.
