Abstract:

The article presents the results of a study which conclusively prove a correlation between self-realization and the individual’s hardiness. It is shown that under certain conditions (in difficult life situations) hardiness as a property of the personality is a predictor of self-fulfillment of the subjects of activity. The article outlines modern trends in research of self-realization in the context of the system paradigm. It further identifies main individual and personal determinants of the manifestation of personal self-realization. The methodological basis of this study was S. I. Kudinov’s polysystemic concept of personality self-realization, provisions of D. A. Leontev’s theory of personality potential, developed within the framework of positive psychology, the theory of Suzanne C. Kobasa and Salvatore Maddi, which interprets hardiness as a personal characteristic that is a common measure of a person’s mental health and reflects three dispositions: commitment, control, and challenge. The purpose of the study presented in this article is to study selfrealization of Palestinian refugees living in difficult life situations with different indicators of hardiness. At the first stage, dominant hardiness dispositions were identified (according to Sidak). There was established a distinction between the hardiness dispositions of “commitment” and “control” in favor of commitment and between the dispositions of “control” and “challenge” in favor of challenge. Using cluster analysis, the study identified types of manifestation of this quality: with a high value of hardiness (active commitment-challenge type of hardiness) and with a low value of hardiness (passive challenge-commitment type of hardiness). The next step describes the specifics of self-realization in representatives with different types of hardiness. Using correlation and factor analysis, the study revealed the psychological structure of selfrealization in the studied groups. It was established that representatives of the active commitment-challenge type of hardiness tend to have a transformational behavioral strategy that ensures the achievement of positive results in manifestations of self-realization. Respondents with the passive challenge-commitment type of hardiness demonstrate an adaptive behavioral strategy in various spheres of life, in the process of self-realization. The article concludes with a conclusion about the role of hardiness as the key condition determining the success of a person’s self-realization in difficult life situations.
