Abstract:

The relevance of the study is associated with the contradiction between the need of high school students for life self-determination in the context of gender socialization and the unpreparedness of the school education system to fulfil this need. The purpose of the study presented in the article is to identify the features of subcultures of young males and females in a Russian town. We tested the hypothesis of qualitative and quantitative differences in the subcultures of young males and females living in a provincial town. We defined the “gender subcultures” notion from a scientific point of view and highlighted the importance of studying the features of subcultures of young males and females at the stage of primary socialization. The study was performed on two samples of high school students (N = 185), young males and females of secondary school No. 3 of Novoulyanovsk using the author’s technique “Questionnaire for the study of subcultures of young males and females” (L. P. Shustova). It was established that there are features specific to the subcultures of young males and females, which include special ways of spending free time and choosing their favourite activities, sources of information and behavioural “norms” in their subcultures, clothing styles and musical preferences, choosing their favourite school subjects and games, topics of jokes and slang, the choice of favourite walking routes in the town, fashion preferences, and, alongside with that, there is a similarity in their value orientations. Providing assistance and support for young males and females in creating preparedness for life, personal and professional self-determination at this stage of socialization, conducting discussions of male and female subcultures will contribute to correcting the gender attitudes of high school students, understanding and accepting individual characteristics and variability of gender-role behaviour of young males and females before they become adults.
