Analysis of Tendencies Related to Educators’ Choice of Protective and Coping Behaviour Strategies

Abstract: 

Urgency of the study of coping and protective strategies peculiarities in educators is conditioned by the presence of negative and unsafe behavioral manifestations related to complicated stressful situations in their professional activity and everyday life. The purpose of the study is to investigate and analyse preference tendencies regarding protective and coping strategies in the behaviour of educators at various stages of professional development. It is presupposed that full-time educators in comparison with students majoring in education, tend to choose more effective coping strategies and more constructive psychological defence. The study was conducted on a sample of teacher training college students (n = 46) and secondary school teachers (n = 46) with application of the following psycho-diagnostic techniques: “Ways of coping behavior” (R. Lazarus, S. Folkman, adaptated by T. L. Kryukova, E. V. Kuftyak, M. S. Zamyshlyaeva), “Lifestyle Index” (R. Plutchik, G. Kellerman, H. Kont, adapted by E. S. Romanova and L. R. Grebennikova). We have found out that presence of tendencies towards the choice of effective problem-oriented coping in practicing teachers is accompanied by a number of both constructive and primitive psychological defences, while future teachers choose less effective defensive and coping strategies with better expressed tendencies towards distancing and denial. The results of the study have practical significance for the development of programmes for forming and developing skills of conscious and safe defensive and coping behaviour in full-time teachers and future educators.
