Preparing Teachers to Work with Senior High School Students on their Personal Self-Determination

Abstract: 

Based on prognostic estimates of today’s teachers’ work, the paper identifies ways to design their work with students on their personal self-determination. In order to do this, training objectives for different levels are identified, which allows to plan their step-by-step implementation based on feedback, ensuring that educational results are achieved. The experiment included a sample of more than 100 high school students, 36 teachers, and 70 future teachers (student interns). The analysis of high school students’ work revealed that they are not aware that they need to accumulate valuable personal experience of self-determination, learn comprehensive ways of self-determination in the context of cognition, communication, and special types of activities. In this regard, the author identified personal characteristics of self-determination of senior high school students, and defined the role of a teacher in facilitating their personal self-determination. It was proved that there is a need for a step-by-step teacher training based on a combination of a teacher’s (future teacher’s) professional capabilities, taking into account professional tasks that the teacher has to address in order to contribute to personal self-determination of senior high-school students.
